What Is Bloat?

Bloat (Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus) is a life-threatening emergency where the stomach fills with gas and may twist on itself, cutting off blood flow.

Warning Signs

  • Distended (swollen) abdomen
  • Unproductive retching (trying to vomit but nothing comes up)
  • Restlessness and pacing
  • Excessive drooling
  • Rapid breathing
  • Weakness or collapse

THIS IS AN EMERGENCY. Get to a vet within 30 minutes.

Risk Factors

  • Deep-chested breeds (huskies qualify)
  • Eating one large meal per day
  • Eating too fast
  • Exercise right after eating
  • Stress

Prevention

  • Feed 2-3 smaller meals instead of one large meal
  • Use a slow-feeder bowl
  • No exercise 1 hour before and after meals
  • Avoid elevated food bowls (contrary to old advice)
