What Is Bloat?
Bloat (Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus) is a life-threatening emergency where the stomach fills with gas and may twist on itself, cutting off blood flow.
Warning Signs
- Distended (swollen) abdomen
- Unproductive retching (trying to vomit but nothing comes up)
- Restlessness and pacing
- Excessive drooling
- Rapid breathing
- Weakness or collapse
THIS IS AN EMERGENCY. Get to a vet within 30 minutes.
Risk Factors
- Deep-chested breeds (huskies qualify)
- Eating one large meal per day
- Eating too fast
- Exercise right after eating
- Stress
Prevention
- Feed 2-3 smaller meals instead of one large meal
- Use a slow-feeder bowl
- No exercise 1 hour before and after meals
- Avoid elevated food bowls (contrary to old advice)
