What to Look For

Health Signs

  • Clear eyes, no discharge
  • Clean ears
  • Healthy coat, no bald patches
  • Active and playful
  • Clean rear end

Temperament Tests

  • Approach test ? Does puppy come to you willingly?
  • Restraint test ? Hold gently on back. Calm = easygoing, struggle = dominant
  • Sound test ? Clap hands. Curious = confident, cowering = shy
  • Retrieve test ? Toss ball. Chasing = high drive, ignoring = independent

Red Flags

  • Breeder won't show parents or living conditions
  • Multiple litters available at once (puppy mill sign)
